The Mondriaan Foundation cooperates with Hivos and Stichting DOEN on the programme Arts Collaboratory. Arts Collaboratory aims to support artists’ initiatives in non-Western countries and to promote international exchanges and the exchange of knowledge with visual arts organisations in the Netherlands.
In today’s international visual art scene, an increasingly important role is being played by independent artists’ initiatives from Africa, Asia and Latin America. It concerns alternative platforms that have been set up in addition to, or as an alternative for an infrastructure that is often absent in the case of contemporary art. These platforms provide an important contribution to the international discourse in such areas as visual art, internationalisation and diversity.
The Mondriaan Foundation specifically supports collaboration and exchange between the artists’ initiatives in Africa, Asia and Latin America that are supported by Hivos and Stichting DOEN and visual art organisations in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Applications can be submitted by artists’ initiatives in Africa, Asia and Latin America that are involved in the Arts Collaboratory programme or by contemporary visual art organisations in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which have a national or international programme of sufficient quality and which contribute to the development of contemporary visual art in the Netherlands. Below is a list of applications that are eligible for support.
Visual art organisations in the Kingdom of the Netherlands can submit an application for:
Artists’ initiatives from Africa, Asia and Latin America that are supported within Arts Collaboratory can submit applications for:
Journalists from the Netherlands can receive reimbursement for travel costs for a visit to one or more of the supported artists’ initiatives in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
In this case of other activities that contribute to exchange and collaboration with organisations in the Netherlands, it is best to contact us by telephone or to send us an e-mail.
An application must have been received at least three months before the start of the project. The application must state, at least:
In principle, a decision will be taken about whether or not to accept the application within three months (and generally earlier). Decisions will be communicated in writing.
Applications will be evaluated on their national or international cultural significance and innovative value.
importance
The project is important to the visual arts sector and its internationalisation in the Netherlands and/or to the arts sector in the country of the partner organisation.
audience reach
The evaluation also looks at the audience reach. For which audience is the activity intended and will that audience be reached adequately? The accessibility of the project and the way in which knowledge transfer takes place are also points for attention.
quality
A project must be carried out in a high-quality and professional way.
The amount of the contribution depends on the nature of the project. Generally-speaking, for a (collaborative) project, a percentage of the total project costs is reimbursed to a maximum of 60%, and a contribution is given for travel, accommodation, transport and insurance in the case of international presentations, articles, research and development.
Projects are only eligible for support if they are not already receiving funding from state cultural funding (such as Policy Document for Culture and HGIS Cultural Funding).
Institutions supported by the Policy Document for Culture can submit applications for activities that are explicitly outside their regular budget.
The cooperation between the Mondriaan Foundation and Stichting DOEN and Hivos for the Arts Collaboratory programme runs until 31 December 2008.
