Arts Collaboratory aims to support art initiatives in non-Western countries and promotes international exchanges and the exchange of knowledge with visual arts organisations in the Netherlands ("Dutch exchange").

For South-South exchange, read Funding opportunities on how to apply for support.
For exchange with the Netherlands, read the criteria and procedure below.

Exchange with the Netherlands is facilitated and financially supported by the Mondriaan Fund until November 5, 2012, but unfortunately has stopped due to governement spending cuts.

Who can apply?

  • Independent visual art initiatives in Africa, Asia and Latin America that are involved in the Arts Collaboratory programme, or
  • Contemporary visual art organisations in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Your organisation:
    • has a national or international programme of sufficient quality.
    • contributes to the development of contemporary visual art in the Netherlands.

Support for Arts Collaboratory partners

Art initiatives from Africa, Asia and Latin America that are supported within Arts Collaboratory can submit applications for:

  • presentations of visual art from the Netherlands by one of the supported art initiatives
  • travel and accommodation costs for guest curators of the art initiatives for a work or research period in the Netherlands

Support for Dutch visual art organisations and journalists

Visual art organisations in the Kingdom of the Netherlands can submit an application for:

  • development costs for collaborative projects with an Arts Collaboratory art initiative (research, travel and accommodation)
  • realisation costs of a collaborative project with an Arts Collaboratory art initiative
  • travel and accommodation costs for a work or research period for curators at one of the supported initiatives
  • project costs for presentations in the applicant institution or by Arts Collaboratory art initiatives
  • presentations with or by the supported initiatives in the applicant institution

Journalists from the Netherlands can receive reimbursement for travel costs for a visit to one or more of the supported art initiatives in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
In this case of other activities that contribute to exchange and collaboration with organisations in the Netherlands, it is best to contact us by telephone or to send us an e-mail.

Criteria

Your applications will be evaluated on its national or international cultural significance and innovative value.

  • Importance: the project is important to the visual arts sector and its internationalisation in the Netherlands and/or to the arts sector in the country of the partner organisation.
  • Audience reach: The evaluation also looks at the audience reach. For which audience is your activity intended and will that audience be reached adequately? The accessibility of the project and the way in which knowledge transfer takes place are also points for attention
  • Quality: A project must be carried out in a high-quality and professional way.

Finances

The amount of the contribution depends on the nature of the project. Generally-speaking, for a (collaborative) project, a percentage of the total project costs is reimbursed to a maximum of 60%, and a contribution is given for travel, accommodation, transport and insurance in the case of international presentations, articles, research and development.

Projects are only eligible for support if they are not already receiving funding from state cultural funding (such as Policy Document for Culture and HGIS Cultural Funding).

Institutions supported by the Policy Document for Culture can submit applications for activities that are explicitly outside their regular budget.

Guidelines proposals

In your application, please state at least:

  • the objectives of the organisation and proposed project;
  • a description of the proposed activity and its relevance to the Arts Collaboratory programme or to the collaborative partner;
  • a budget for the proposed activity, the budget of the entire organisation and a funding plan.

Send your proposal to

Sanne Jansen, s.jansen@mondriaanfonds.nl or call +31 (0)20 676 20 32

Deadline

An application must have been received at least three months before the start of the project.

The cooperation between the Mondriaan Fund and Stichting DOEN and Hivos for the Arts Collaboratory programme runs until 31 December 2012.

Procedure

In principle, a decision will be taken about whether or not to accept the application within three months (and generally earlier). Decisions will be communicated in writing.
