Cascoland is an international network of artists, architects, designers and performers. Cascoland initiates multidisciplinary interventions in public space to create awareness about the use and design of public space in a positive and creative framework and to promote international exchange and collaboration.
Cascoland wants to generate new forms of interaction and ways of experiencing the multiple urban realities. Through construction of architectural objects, artistic interventions and audience participation, public space is temporarily intensively activated. Artists, audiences, residents, initiatives and organisations are being mobilized to participate in the shaping of their public space and to make it a reflection of their identity.
Cascoland started in 2004 with a pilot project in the Netherlands. In 2006, 2007 and 2008 Cascoland has done three projects in big cities in South Africa, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. The laboratory phases of the three projects ran for 2 months in which a wide range of projects was launched. All these projects were presented during 10 day manifestations, sometimes taking the form of a festival/exhibition or, as was the case in Durban, of a daily street parade, mobilizing audiences to become part of the intervention.
In September and October 2008 Cascoland realised a project in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, in collaboration with Art East.
The Cascoland projects/artwork can be seen as tools to be used by participants and audiences rather than artworks to be exhibited. The aim is to change and challenge perceptions, empowerment of individuals and communities and the creating of awareness with residents, audiences, planners, designers, organisations and authorities.
