Profile

The independent artistic scenario in Lima / Peru remains active thanks to the tenacity of the agents which conform it.  There are few institutions that support alternative art projects in a significant way. Most of these contributions, due to their pragmatic nature, do not allow a sustainable and efficient development of creation and investigation projects. Facing a total lack of cultural policies, the independent art movement permanently struggles to obtain a space for production, dissemination and communication with the social environment.

It is in this context that La asociación para la investigación teatral La Otra Orilla  - LOT, a non-profit cultural organization for theatre research, was formed in 1998 under the direction of Carlos Cueva and young actors coming from different disciplines:  theatre, visual arts, architecture, music and psychology, whom have been able to consolidate a permanent creation team in the Peruvian theatre scene. Its productions range from experimental mise-en-scene to the so-called Zonas Fronterizas (Border Zones): Short-lived artistic events carried out in obsolete and/or abandoned spaces.

LOT has the objective to support and promote theatre investigation. Through the development of conceptual workshops and the recovery of specific urban spaces, its projects put special interest in the recovery of social memory. Likewise, it promotes the use of any material required by the expression, capable to create metaphors that reflect aspects of our time. LOT keeps permanent activity in the field of direction and pedagogy through workshops, seminars, discussion tables, and symposium of diverse nature, which allows the interdisciplinary training of many young artists.

At present, LOT is forming its “Centro de la Performance” – “Performance Centre”: a space for interdisciplinary artistic investigation and creation, audiovisual archive and documentation centre for the arts and humanities. This initiative has as long-term goals to provide pedagogical services, deepen the artistic research, stimulate innovative technology, offer a space for creation and to confront artistic work with other realities and socio-cultural contexts.
