Profile

TEOR/éTica Foundation is founded by Virginia Perez Ratton, former director of the Museum of Contemporary Arts (MADC) in  Costa Rica.  Virginia Perez, an internationally renown curator, created this independent art space in a old house in Barrio Amón (historical centre in the city of San José).  The place is remodelled to house a small exhibition lounge, a centre of documentation and filing, three shared offices and a meeting and conference room.  The Foundation's mission is to create a space for the critical meditation of the visual arts in the region, promoting the interchange and dissemination of activities (exhibitions, publications, electronics, etc.) and encounters with national artists or foreign guests.  TEOR/etica in a short period of time has achieved a position in the Costa Rican and Central American visual media, and has established important links with European arts.  The number of activities carried out include quarterly national and international exhibitions; bilingual publications and a virtual data base with thousands of images of regional artists; frequent theoretic discussions and/or workshops, participation of the director as curator in several biennales (Venice, Lima, Korea, Denmark) and as special adviser in different events (Noorderlicht -Netherland, Mapas Abiertos -España, Coleccion Daros -Suiza).   In 2006 TEOR/etica organized a major event, called “Central America: the doubtful strait”, an international exhibition that brought together 70 artists of the region and abroad and was launched simultaneously in 9 musums in San José additional to TEOR/eticas own space
